Course DescriptionThis is a practical course, with students learning how to care for, interact and work with young children. Students can complete this certificate one day per week for one year, with additional time required for work placement to complete the full certificate. Students with additional learning needs will need to contact their VET Coordinator prior to being accepted into this course. The course may be able to be customised to the student’s ability. Once a student has completed placement hours and units of competency, they will be qualified to work within the childcare industry. This is a TGSS (Training Guarantee for Secondary Students) course. The fee is paid fully or partially by the government to the RTO (Registered Training Organisation) although in some cases there may be an additional gap fee that needs to be paid as this course may not be fully funded. Families may or will be required to pay for the TGSS fee if one is required for the course you will attend. Please check the level of subsidy with your school as to how much the school will support.

Entry RequirementsSuccessful completion of Year 10 with C grade or above for Year 10 English.
Other RequirementsStudents will be provided with a polo shirt that can be worn with black pants. This will also be worn to work placement. Closed in shoes are required at all times. Students will require access to a laptop and internet access at their home or at their home school to submit online assignments. It is highly recommended that students interested in doing this course have completed one week of work experience in a childcare setting prior. We encourage students to obtain their DCSI screening prior to commencement through their Home School.

Competency can only be acquired with 85% attendance to class and completion of units and work placement as required.
Training Cost Fee$650.00 GST free
This fee consists of $650 RTO costs (invoiced to the Home School by the Host School).

Department for Education (public) schools in Western Adelaide region (WASSN) will subsidise the training cost for students if it is part of the students’ genuine career pathway and SACE. Please check the level of subsidy with your Home School. Private school students and families please see your school’s VET Leader to find out about the VET Payment Policy in your school.

Personal Equipment and Materials$118.00 GST included
This consists of $45 polo shirt, $15 ID badge and $58 DCSI Clearance. If not purchased personally by the student or family, the Host School (where you are doing the VET course) will invoice families for these items.
Cost NotesThere is a compulsory Regional VET fee of $100.00 (GST free) for all courses. This fee will be invoiced to the family by the Home School. Schools outside of the member and non-member school portfolio (please check WASSN policy at will have to pay an additional fee of $100.00 per student + GST based on administration fees. The student's Home School will collect this fee from the family directly.
