Course DescriptionSouth Australia is the national centre of naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment, and the confirmed location for Australia’s next generation Future Submarines and Future Frigates. This course aims to provide students with skills and competencies required in Engineering Trades that will be in high demand. Students will learn skills that are applicable to a range of engineering trades, as well as required theory. Metal machining using a lathe and milling machine, together with a range of specialised equipment will be introduced during the course. Oxy/Acetylene and MMA welding techniques are used. Projects, design work and testing are integral components of the course. Students will be supported by local industry partnerships for visits and workplace learning.
PathwaysThis course may lead to an Engineering Trades, Automotive, Diesel, Plumbing or Electrical Apprenticeship. It may also lead to Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Engineering or Bachelor Degree in Engineering. The maritime content will highlight the history of both the school and the region in providing a highly skilled workforce for the maritime and allied industries.
Entry RequirementsMetalwork at Year 10 is desirable, counselling regarding this career path.

Training Cost Fee$600.00 GST free
This fee consists of $300 trained teacher delivery and $300 RTO costs (Host School to invoice Home School). Department for Education (public) schools in Western Adelaide region (WASSN) will subsidise the training cost for students if it is part of the students’ genuine career pathway and SACE. Please check the level of subsidy with your Home School. Private school students and families please see your school’s VET Leader to find out about the VET Payment Policy in your school.

Cost NotesThere is a compulsory Regional VET fee of $100.00 (GST free) for all courses. This fee will be invoiced to the family by the Home School. Schools outside of the member and non-member school portfolio (please check WASSN policy at will have to pay an additional fee of $100.00 per student + GST based on administration fees. The student's Home School will collect this fee from the family directly.
